8 OF THE BEST NEIGHBORHOODS IN SPRINGFIELD RIGHT NOW

If you’re moving into the area for the first time, or if you’re just looking for a new part of town, this is for you.  Springfield has a steady supply of great neighborhoods. There are lots of different options for lots of different lifestyles and we’re going to take a closer look at eight of the coolest neighborhoods in the city right now!

U Heights is a historical gem in the center of Springfield.  It has a variety of aesthetically stunning architectural styles and tree-lined lots.  If you’re looking for charm and character, this is a great place to start.  University Heights is just a short drive from downtown Springfield, the epicenter of foodie culture and the art scene in the city.  It’s also a straight shot to the Medical Mile, making it a very short drive to Mercy Hospital, Cox Hospital, and other clinics on South National. If you’re a dog lover, there’s a picture perfect park right in your backyard.  Phelps Grove park has a wonderful walking trail through a shady patch of beautiful old trees.  On the East edge of the park, you’ll see the Springfield Art Museum, which features some of the area’s best original art work and pieces from all over the world.

Rountree is the pre-eminent downtown neighborhood.  You’ll find some of the most architecturally beautiful homes in the area.  Most of the homes were built before the Second World War and the feeling of small town America shines through.  You’re also right in the thick of the action in Rountree.  There are tons of great events nearby, including Wingapalooza, Cider Days, the Food Truck Festival, Taste of SoMo, First Fridays, the Route 66 Festival and plenty more. Walkability is top notch in this neighborhood!  The Springfield Cardinals play just a short drive away, too!

There’s also an abundance of great food nearby.  Tea Bar and Bites is a fantastic place to grab brunch. Imo’s Pizza is right next door if you’re hungry for some St. Louis thin crust.  One of the newest joints to check out is Cherry Picker Package X Fare.  They have great coffee, a wine bar, fromage, canapé, and plenty more.  You can also visit Elle’s Patisserie if you have a sweet tooth.  Elle’s makes some of the finest pastries, truffles and cookies in town.

Are you a golfer? Rivercut might be the perfect landing spot for you.  This is one of the premier golf communities anywhere in the Ozarks.  It’s nestled amongst the trees in south central Springfield and it backs up to James River.  There’s always plenty going on in the community, but if you’re looking to go out on the town, some of the finest restaurants in town are just a short ride away. Chesterfield Family Center is just down the street if you want to get in shape and a few minutes west is Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, one of the first major battles in the Civil War.

Just south of Twin Oaks Country Club, Ironbridge offers a private lifestyle in a great south Springfield location. Food and shopping are close by, including MaMa Jean’s Natural Market in the Green Circle . It’s a healthy eater’s dream, featuring fresh produce, natural supplements, and tons of great products you won’t find anywhere else in the city.  Hinode Japanese Steak House is just down National Avenue if you’re a sushi lover and Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant is just off Republic Road!  For dessert, you’ve got to try Hurt’s Donut in the Twin Oaks Shopping Center. Green Circle Shopping center is also nearby and if you’re an outdoorsy person, you’re going to love Dynamic Earth.  It’s the one-stop shop in Springfield for active wear and hiking/climbing gear. Just west of this neighborhood is the largest library in the area.  The Springfield Library center has tons of great events and of course, plenty of books as well.

Midtown is highlighted by Historic Commercial Street.  In the past few years, some really great businesses have started here, including Big Momma’s Coffee House, Eurasia, Cafe Cusco, Lindberg’s, That Lebanese Place, and plenty more.  Springfield’s own Askinosie Chocolate is on C Street too!  The Savoy Ball Room has regular dance lessons and classes for ball room dancing, swing dance, and lots of other styles as well. There are several neighborhoods surrounding C Street in Midtown, all of them carry homes with a historical touch.  Plenty of character is available with front porches, original hardwoods and plantation shudders.  If you’re looking for a great spot to take in some culture on a budget, Midtown is a great place to look!

If mid-century vibes are your thing, Southern Hills should be your first stop.  There are some seriously cool 1950s designs in this ‘hood.  The clean lines inspired by world famous architect Frank Loyd Wright are prevalent in a lot of the homes in this neighborhood.  It lives up to its name with rolling hills and a beautiful pond right in the middle of the community.

There’s also a popular swim and tennis club here that would make a great place to hang out when the weather’s nice.  Strewn throughout Southern Hills is the Galloway Creek Greenway, a walking, running and biking trail that features some amazingly peaceful views and a great venue to enjoy the fresh air at Lone Pine Park.

If you’re looking for luxury, start here.  Highland Springs has some of the finest homes anywhere in the area.  The community is surrounded by a beautifully designed golf course and has regular events in its top-of-the-line facilities.  There’s also an Olympic-size swimming pool, 24-hour security and a three story clubhouse.

It’s right next door to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, which recognizes the state’s very best athletes, including Tony LaRussa, Stan Musial and Bo Jackson.  It’s a great way to spend an afternoon for sports fans and for kids.  Highland is secluded just off Highway 65, but it’s only a short drive from the Battlefield Mall, the Springfield 11 IMAX and lots of other great local spots.

Ravenwood and Ravenwood South are located off Republic Road in Southeastern Springfield.  Just north of the subdivision is the French Quarter Plaza.  This shopping center has some real gems in it.  Touch Restaurant and Oyster bar is one of the best in town, serving up fine dining foods and appetizers.  Hebrews Coffee is a great spot to meet up for some java.  Harem and Company is one of the newest hot spots for fashion in Springfield.  Just to the east is Farmers Park, which is a community that holds regular farmer’s markets, but it’s much more than just locally sourced produce. Farmers Park has some of the best shopping and restaurants anywhere in town.  Hudson Hawk is a great place to get a stylish haircut for men and Studio 417 is a great place for women to get their hair cut and there’s a blow dry bar!  There are some wonderful restaurants as well.  Metropolitan Farmer has amazing locally sourced food and an eclectic menu.  Just upstairs from Metro is Barley, Wheat and Rye, one of Springfield’s hottest bars.  The Aviary Cafe is also in Farmers Park.  This is a fantastic place to get sweet and savory crepes and other French cuisine.  Farmers Park has lots to offer in the way of shopping, too.  Staxx is one of Springfield’s most popular boutiques and Five Pound Apparel has some amazing local t shirts and apparel.
